Sparagana Steps Into Super's Role

Search to begin for permanent replacement

The Pottstown School District promoted assistant superintendent Jeff Sparagana to acting superintendent last week, temporarily filling the post vacated when former superintendent Reed Lindley unexpectedly resigned in September.

The Mercury reports that Sparagana's new salary of $160,624 makes him one of the lowest paid superintendents in the county. In addition to the pro-rated raise of about $8,000, Sparagana will receive thousands in retirement and life-insurance related bonuses. School board vice-president Robert Hartman reportedly said that hiring an interim superintendent to complete the school year would have cost more than $286,000.

The board will now begin the process of recruiting a permanent superintendent, though board president Judyth Zahora reportedly said she is holding off on engaging a search firm until she understands the process better.
