Pottstown- Steelers manager Todd Endy, in his fifth year, couldn’t have been happier with the way his young Pottstown American Legion team started the season, jumping out to a 7-2 record and a share of first place in the Bux –Mont league.
“We have been playing so well,” said Endy. “It has been a lot of fun so far and the kids just really seem to be playing together, it’s a special environment. Even with three years in a row with double digit wins, we are still very young, we have three sixteen-year-olds as the foundation of our pitching staff.”

One of those aforementioned teens, West-Mont Christian’s Pat Flynn, took the hill for the Steelers.
On Wednesday night in a first place showdown with Perkiomen Post 184, and although the Steelers came out on the short end of a 5-0 final, Flynn was solid in five innings of work allowing five runs on five hits while fanning five in the process.
“Pat pitched fine tonight,” added Endy. “We kept us in it. This is the first game when we haven’t scored at least five or six runs, we just didn’t swing the bats well tonight. I am still thrilled with where we are in the league, to have seven wins this early is great, we just need to keep with playing Pottstown baseball, hit and use our speed to get some things going.”
The Steelers didn’t have much of a chance to cause their typical havoc on the base paths as Pottstown recorded single hits in five innings but did not have multiple base runners in any inning and only left three men on base for the entire tilt.
Pottsgrove class of 2010 returnee Scott Madl led off the fourth inning but got thrown out attempting to steal second on a play in which it looked like the tag was missed, ending a rally before it got going.
“I love playing baseball,” said Madl, who attended Penn State lat fall. “It’s cool to combine with the Pottstown kids this year as one team. We have all played together and known each other since we where kids . . . We just need to hit a lot better than we did tonight.”
The Pottstown defense continued its solid play as the Steelers recorded a double play and did not commit an error in the contest to remain within striking distance but could find an answer for Widener University’s Colin Weiss (5 IP, 4 hits, 0ER, 2 k, 0 BB).
“Give him credit, he really kept us off balance,” said Endy. “He wasn’t overpowering, he just mixed in the breaking stuff and seemed to have pretty good control of his fast ball. We just had one of those nights. That’s baseball.”
"I felt pretty good tonight,” said Weiss. “I know they have some good hitters, I was just able to hit spots with my fast ball and mixed in the change and slider. We really played well as a team tonight and got the hit when we had guys on, which was huge.”
Perkiomen posted three runs in the fourth, breaking up a scoreless tie, when Justin Minder ripped a two-out, two-run double in the gap following an RBI single by designated hitter Chad Force to snag a 3-0 lead.
A double by force in the fifth scored two more runs for Post 184, as Mike Paul had reached on a double, following Kyle Saylor reaching base on a fielder’s choice, to close out the scoring.
“I felt good tonight, I didn’t have my best night, but I thought I threw OK,” said Flynn. “It’s been great so far this year. We have been playing so well as a team, it’s a lot of fun to come to the park. I am looking forward to what we can accomplish this year.”
