Trojan Pride: 5 Unforgettable Athletes From Pottstown High School
From local fields to national fame, these stars got their start in Pottstown.

Sports run deep in Pottstown, and Pottstown High School has long been at the heart of it. It’s no surprise some standout talent once wore the Trojan uniform. Today we're celebrating five unforgettable athletes from Pottstown High School who made a name for themselves well beyond the hometown field.
1. Bobby Shantz – MLB Pitcher (Philadelphia Athletics, New York Yankees)
A Pottstown High School Class of 1943 alum, Shantz became one of baseball’s most decorated pitchers, winning American League MVP and earning multiple Gold Glove awards as a standout fielding pitcher. He later helped the Yankees during their championship-era runs and is widely profiled in baseball historical archives. (Source: SABR BioProject)
2. Aaron Beasley – NFL Cornerback (Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons)
A Pottstown Senior High School graduate (Class of 1991), Beasley went on to become a consensus All-American at West Virginia University before being drafted into the NFL, where he played for multiple teams and built a long professional career. 3. Gene Venzke – Middle-Distance Runner (U.S. Olympic Team)
A Pottstown High School Class of 1932 alum, Venzke was a nationally celebrated runner who set world records indoors (including the mile) and later competed as part of the U.S. Olympic team in Berlin. 4. Lori Salindong Greis – Gymnast
A Pottstown High School graduate, Greis went on to compete at Towson University, where she helped lead the Tigers to four consecutive ECAC championships and multiple NCAA regional appearances. She set school records, including becoming Towson’s all-time leading scorer at the time, earned multiple conference titles and was named Towson’s Female Athlete of the Year. 5. Jack Deloplaine – NFL Running Back (Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington Redskins, Chicago Bears)
Nicknamed “Hydroplane,” Deloplaine attended Pottstown High School before starring at Salem College. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1976, won two Super Bowl rings and had professional stints with the Redskins and Bears. His NFL career is documented in official player records.
