Upper Pottsgrove Fire Company Needs You

Volunteer fire company seeks to double membership.

The Upper Pottsgrove Township Fire Company is spending the summer actively searching for new volunteer firefighters, according to Fire Police Captain and Membership Secretary Jim Folk.

“We could really use some people, especially during the daytime hours,” Folk told Patch.

An active contributor to the community since 1949, the company currently claims about 20 members—a number Folk is determined to double through current recruiting efforts.

“We’re using different strategies to find people—flyers in stores, talking to people at community events,” said Folk, who started with the company in 2006 and rose through the ranks to fire police captain. “We’re looking for people who have time to donate and who will be dedicated to the company.”

Applicants must be over 18 years of age, though Folk mentioned plans to start a junior program for prospective firefighters between the ages of 14 and 17 sometime in the next year. There are no residence requirements—in fact, Folk said many of the current members come from the outskirts of the Upper Pottsgrove Township community.

In addition, Folk’s wife Kerri is president of the company’s auxiliary. Kerri is searching for people to support the company through fundraising efforts, including candle sales and the annual Easter flower sale.

Jim Folk encouraged interested community members to come out and learn more about the company.

“I really enjoy what I do here,” he said. “We have a welcoming atmosphere and I’ve worked with some great people over the years. I just love what I do.”
