2 Arrested, Fires Set, Poles Climbed After Villanova Win

The celebrations following the team's third national championship were mostly harmless, but police had to be take some action Monday night.

VILLANOVA, PA – Villanova brought home its third NCAA Men's Basketball National Championship Monday night after defeating University of Michigan 79 to 62. And that meant Villanova's campus and the surrounding area was buzzing with celebrations, some unlawful.

Radnor Police said a large amount of Villanova students, alumni, Radnor residents, and high school students flocked the streets to celebrate the team's win.

Overall, police said the celebrations had a very minimal impact on the area as much of the night was orderly and good natured.

The school gave its students the day off Tuesday following the second title win in three years.

While post-victory revelry was largely harmless, reports of two arrests, a few small fires being lit, poles being climbed, and signs being torn out of the ground have surfaced.

Randor Police said two people were arrested at Villanova for assault and underage drinking.

Lower Merion Township Police made one arrest for drunken disorderly conduct in Lower Merion Township, but officials said other than that and some illegal fireworks the celebrations there were orderly.

Police said a few small fires were set in the area. Students were reportedly jumping over it, according to CBS Philadelphia. Police arrived on the scene and dispersed the crowd from around the fire.

In a similar effort to keep rowdy fans from climbing poles after the Eagles Super Bowl win, poles around the campus were lubricated to prevent climbing, but some skilled climbers were able to get on top of some poles in the area, Main Line Media News reports.

Police closed down a portion of Lancaster Avenue at halftime in preparation for fans flocking to the streets.

About 35 people were evaluated at a triage center set up nearby, Radnor Police said. A few of those people had to be taken to a hospital.

Radnor Police said their coordination with Villanova's public safety team was "phenomenal" and worked very well.

On the heels of their historic win, the Eagles gave shout outs to the Wildcats on Twitter.
