Delco Honors Pearl Harbor Attack's 75th Anniversary

People of a certain age in Hawaii and across the United States will never forget Dec. 7, 1941 as a day that changed everything, the day we were attacked on American soil, and the day that thrust the United States into World War II.

“And we should never forget,” County Council Chairman Mario J. Civera Jr. said in October as he welcomed veterans from American Legion Post 94 in Brookhaven to commemorate the upcoming 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor.

“This year marks the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japanese forces. That attack left 2,403 dead and crippled our Pacific fleet,” Civera said. “Because the 75th anniversary may be one of the last opportunities to honor the last of those who experienced that attack, Hawaii and the nation have planned an 11-day commemoration to the 'Greatest Generation.'"

Locally, veteran organizations are asking residents to observe a moment of silence and reflection at 12:53 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, with prayer, the ringing of church bells, or the sounding of firehouse sirens.

As part of the commemoration, a new documentary called “Remember Pearl Harbor” will premiere on television on Dec. 4.

The theme for the 75th anniversary is “Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future.”

“There is a dual message which is to acknowledge the men and women who answered the call of duty during World War II, and to honor all those who have served during the seven decades since that day,” Civera said. “Today, we are at peace with Japan, but we are still fighting tyranny and terrorism at home and abroad.”
