GLEN MILLS, PA — The Glen Mills School was ordered closed and all the children removed after allegations of abuse and cover-ups surfaced recently, according to state officials.

The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) Monday ordered an emergency removal of all children still at the Glen Mills School in Delaware County.

Under the order, all kids living at the school will be removed and relocated as soon as this can be safely accomplished.

There were 64 children at the school, 21 from Pennsylvania counties and 43 from eight other states. No new admissions are allowed during the closure.

State officials will be working with students' states and counties to ensure the kids are relocated either at their home or another placement as close to home as possible and as quickly as possible.

Before the school was ordered to close, counties, states, and judicial systems with children at Glen Mills were notified that the emergency removal order would be issued.

State workers will stay at the school when the children are removed to continue monitoring conditions and ensure student safety.

"As the investigation into allegations raised in recent reporting continues, we must do what is necessary to ensure that no more children are at risk of physical and emotional harm," said DHS Secretary Teresa Miller. "This removal is one step of an ongoing process, and DHS is committed to seeing this investigation through to ensure that any individual responsible for endangering the welfare of children and coercing silence can be held responsible. As this investigation continues, it is important that we understand the full scope of incidents and mistreatment that occurred at this school. I encourage any former students or their families, Glen Mills staff, or anyone else to share their story."

According to CBS Philadelphia, the school is accused of allowing of abuse — such as beatings — and covering up said abuse.

The Delaware County District Attorney's Office says the investigation has resulted in arrests and prosecutions of individuals for their crimes, the outlet reports.
