Driver Killed By Off-Duty Cop In South Philadelphia Identified​

PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia Police have released the identity of the man who hit a pedestrian with a vehicle then was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer Monday morning in South Philadelphia.

Police said Khalil Lawal, 31, of Arlington, Virginia was the man shot and killed Monday morning.

Police said Lawal was shot and killed by an off-duty officer following an incident that occurred at about 7:36 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29 on the 1300 block of Bigler Street near Broad Street in South Philadelphia.

Lawal struck a pedestrian that morning while driving a Honda Accord, police said.

A good Samaritan pulled his vehicle in front of the Honda to stop Lawal from leaving the area, but Lawal allegedly go out of the Honda and chased the good Samaritan, police said.

The off-duty office saw the scene unfolding, exited his truck, drew his service weapon, identified himself as police and confronted Lawal, police said.

Lawal then began assaulting the officer, according to police, which led the officer to fire his service weapon at Lawal.

Lawal was shot in the face, legs, and torso, police said. He was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 10:15 a.m.

The pedestrian was treated and released at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for abrasions and contusions to his head and legs, according to police.

The officer was treated and released from Methodist Hospital for abrasions and contusions to his head and shoulder, police said.

No one else was injured in the incident, according to police.

Police said Monday that the officer has been placed on administrative duty, per the department's policy and that an investigation into the incident is underway.
