Plein Air Painting in the Traditions of Art: Lecture with William Perthes of the Violette De Mazia Foundation

While the image of a painter at work in a field or on a street corner may seem a commonplace, the practice of painting plein air, or "in the open air", is a fairly recent development. Although landscape painting has a long history within the traditions of art until the nineteenth century almost all of this work was painted in the artist’s studio. This talk will discuss the important contribution plein air painting has made to the development of landscape painting by considering its place within the traditions of art.
