Ghost Town Near Radnor Named One Of State's 'Spookiest' Places

A little-known ghost town tucked away on an abandoned section of the Schuylkill Canal in Chester County has been named one of the state’s “spookiest” locations.

Frick’s Lock, also known as Frick’s Lock Historical District, was recently featured by Only In Your State.

Frick’s Lock is located just across the river from the Limerick Nuclear Power Plant, near the border with Pottstown.

A village was established there in the early 1800s, supported by the commerce brought to the area by the Schuylkill Navigation Company’s locks and canal system.

When railroads replaced the canal as the region’s prime mode of shipping, the town began slipping away, according to the Schuylkill River National and State Heritage Area.

PECO eventually bought the land, and when the Limerick Nuclear plant was built, the remaining homes were borded up, according to the Heritage Area’s website.

Exelon funded a $2.3 million restoration in 2013, making very occassional public tours possible. Tours run every other Saturday from May through October. Go here for more detailed information.
