Help Name Philly Zoo's Newest Gorilla

Baby female gorilla to be named after one of four orphaned gorillas at Democratic Republic of Congo gorilla rehab center.

After much public interest and about a month of waiting, the Phildealphia Zoo announced the newest member of it's gorilla troop is a girl. But the baby, born Aug. 26, needs a name and the zoo is looking to you for help deicding what she is to be called.

According to the zoo's website, staffers at the zoo chose four potential names, Amani (ah-MAH-nee), Isangi (eee-SANG-ghee), Mapendo (ma-PEN-doh), and Muyisa (moo-YEE-sah), for the gorilla babe. The names come from orphaned gorilla at Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center (GRACE) in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The public can vote for their favorite name by donating to GRACE, which works with orphaned gorillas who are victims of poaching, the zoo said.

"Each $1 donated counts as one vote for the name of your choice, and you may cast multiple votes by making larger donations," the website says. "Donations are tax-deductible, and all of the proceeds will benefit GRACE, which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Philadelphia Zoo will match the donations up to $10,000."

Those who vote will be entered to win a Philadelphia Zoo prize package from PECO that includes a family plus membership, a behind-the-scenes experience, $25 food voucher and $25 zoo shop gift certificate.
