'High-Visibility' DUI, Speeding Crackdown Planned Over July 4 Weekend

The effort, which will include roving patrols and checkpoints, will focus on speeding, impaired drivers and traffic violations.

A "high-visibility" enforcement crackdown focusing on impaired, aggressive and speeding drivers will be in place across Pennsylvania over the holiday weekend, according to State Police, who are partnering with local law enforcement in the effort.

Through the Fourth of July weekend, law enforcement will be on the lookout for traffic violations and impaired drivers, according to an announcement from State Police and PennDOT.

The effort, which will include roving patrols and checkpoints, aims to decrease crashes related to speeding and impaired driving.

The increased enforcement is funded through PennDOT's statewide distribution of more than $4.7 million in federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Last year in Pennsylvania, there were 330 alcohol-related crashes between June 26 and July 5.

That was an increase from the year before, when there were 326 alcohol-related crashes. In 2014, however, there were also 11 fatalities over the same period.

“We urge motorists to buckle up and use caution when traveling over the holiday,” said State Police Commissioner Tyree C. Blocker.
