Honoring my dad -- and all veterans

Many men and women have served our country in the armed forces with selflessness and distinction. My dad was one of them.

At 34 and as the father of two small children when WWII broke out, Dad could have have remained a civilian, but he chose to enlist and was given a direct commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Army Quartermaster Corps.

His responsibilities included the oversight and major decision-making involving the purchase and allocation of all woolen textiles for military use. He rose to the rank of captain and served until the end of the war.

There were many reasons why I loved and admired my dad, and his selfless spirit was one of them. I salute him -- and all veterans -- on this day in their honor.
