More AI-Infused Traffic Signals Installed In Radnor

RADNOR, PA — Radnor Township has expanded its use of artificial intelligence in traffic lights on Lancaster Avenue, officials said Thursday.

Several months ago, the township began implementing a "Traffic Adaptive System" on Lancaster Avenue, using AI-powered technology designed to ease traffic flow, officials say. The algorithm uses real-time data, adjusting the timing of traffic lights based on congestion.

The system has helped reduce traffic at the Blue Route Interchange, according to township officials.

In September, the Radnor Township Board of Commissioners awarded a contract to have the tech installed in traffic signals on Lancaster Avenue from Villanova Center to Airdale Road.

Radnor has implemented the second phase of phase of the Lancaster Avenue project, the township announced Thursday. The township has installed the tech at the following cross streets: St. Davids, Villanova Center, Sproul Road, St. Thomas Way, Ithan, Lowrey’s and Airedale.

But it doesn't always run smoothly, according to a township advisory.

"The Traffic Adaptive System was 'learning' for several weeks prior to going live on March 17," the advisory says. "We fully anticipated that there would be glitches in the timing or equipment that would have to be adjusted, and they are being addressed as we speak."
