The National Fire Prevention Association is focusing this year's National Fire Prevention Week – which runs from Oct. 9 to Oct. 15 – on ensuring smoke alarms are up to date and working properly. The "Don't Wait Check The Date" campaign urges citizens to replace smoke alarms every 10 years.

This marks the third year in a row the NFPA has focused on smoke alarms because according to survey data the public has many misconceptions about smoke alarms, which may put them at increased risk in the event of a home fire, the association said.
