Radnor SD Parent University To Explain New Math Curriculum

Several Parent University sessions are planned for later in the academic year to update parents on Math in Focus curriculum.

Radnor Township School District is rolling out new math curriculum for its students in Kindergarten through eighth grade. Math in Focus is replacing the district's old curriculum, Everyday Math, and the district wants to keep parents and guardians abreast on how math will be taught.

On Thursday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. in the ground floor conference room of the district's administration building – 135 S. Wayne Ave., Wayne – the district will hold a "Parent University" session where the new curriculum will be explained to parents and guardians.

"At the end of the day," district communications director Michael Petitti said, "math doesn't change. But the way it's taught changes."

Petitti said the district is working to keep parents and guardians informed how their children will be learning math.

"Parent University sessions are meant to give parents hands on experience with how Math in Focus is playing out," he said.

Thursday's session will feature actual lessons and activities that students will experience, giving parents and guardians a look into their children's classrooms.

The district will hold more Parent University sessions in February and May to let parents and guardians know how the curriculum has been working.

The sessions will be recorded, so parents and guardians who are unable to attend Thursday's session can still get the info they need via the district's website.

"We've been preparing for Math in Focus for the past year," Pettiti said. Pettiti went on to say the large focus of the Friday Sept. 30 teacher in service day is Math in Focus and that teachers have been undertaking professional development to ensure Math in Focus works with their students.

"We want to make parents comfortable," he said.

The district previously held a Parent University session in August. A video of the session is available here.
