Scanlon Flips PA's 5th District For Democrats: Election Results

Democrat Mary Gay Scanlon has flipped the seat previously held by Pat Meehan after defeating Republican Pearl Kim.

State data shows Scanlon has 189,893 votes to Kim's 101,846.

9:30 p.m.

Democrat Mary Gay Scanlon has flipped the seat formerly held by Republican Pat Meehan, defeating Republican Pearl Kim.

Associated Press reports Scanlon has 23,009 votes to Kim's 16,369 with 17 percent of districts reporting.

Patch will update the story with more results as the night goes on.


9:10 p.m.

Scanlon is ahead 5,421 votes to Kim's 2,907, but only 5 percent of districts are reporting.

8:50 p.m.

Early returns show a Scanlon lead in the 5th District.

Scanlon, with less than 1 percent of ballots counted, has 78.1 percent of those votes and Kim 21.9 percent.

In the race for state representative in the 5th Congressional District, Democrat Mary Gay Scanlon and Republican Pearl Kim are looking to take over representing the Delco and surrounding area.

6 p.m.

Poll workers and political volunteers said they have seen a major turnout in voters, rivaling a presidential election.

With just a few hours left to vote, one precinct in Radnor Township was reporting more than a 50 percent turnout.

Accoridng to poll workers in Radnor, one 85-year-old voter was brought to the polls by his son, who drove from Virginia to Radnor so his father could cast a ballot.

Also, another voter got a ride from her daughter-in-law to the polls, but only after the daughter-in-law drove from Maryland to help her mother-in-law cast a ballot.

Volunteers with the Democratic and Republican parties said line formed outside the Radnor Fire Company polling location before 7 a.m. to vote.


The two faced off for a special election in May to fill the seat left vacant with Pat Meehan's departure from Congress.

Scanlon, a Democrat, is a pro bono Counsel at Ballard Spahr LLP. In that role, she worked to help those affected by the Trump Administration's travel ban. She also was part of the Voting Rights Task Force of the Association of Pro Bono Counsel, where she took on the issue of heavily gerrymandered congressional districts.

Kim, a Republican, is a first-generation Korean-American from Radnor Township.

She previously served as an Assistant District Attorney and a Senior Deputy Attorney General for Pennsylvania. In those roles, Kim took on human trafficking; advocated for victims of child physical and sexual abuse, domestic violence, and rape; was tapped to bolster campus safety and combat sexual assault on college campuses.
