Sophia Tornetta Reaches 100-Goal Milestone

The Agnes Irwin field hockey player reached 100 career goals in a game against Springside Chestnut Hill Academy on Friday, Oct. 31.

Varsity field hockey player Sophia Tornetta made Agnes Irwin history on Friday when she scored her 100th career goal in a game against Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. The senior right forward is the first field hockey player to reach the milestone in the school’s history, according to Athletics Director Sheila Pauley.

A four-year starter, Tornetta came to Agnes Irwin in ninth grade and is in her second season as an elected team captain. The Princeton recruit scored nine goals her freshman year, 18 as a sophomore and 33 as a junior. Prior to Friday’s game, Tornetta had scored 36 goals as a senior, for a total of 96 career goals.

With classmates and family on hand counting down, Tornetta scored her remaining four goals against Springside Chestnut Hill well before the end of the game’s first half. Tornetta scored her 100th goal assisted by her sister, sophomore Julianna Tornetta, and was swiftly met with cheers and hugs from her fellow players, coaches and parents. AIS ultimately beat Springside Chestnut Hill 8-0.

“I felt very happy and extremely grateful that my team came together on our senior day to help make this possible,” Tornetta said of the milestone. “Our coaches, teachers and friends were along the sidelines cheering me along the entire time. It was amazing!”

Tornetta is also a member of the USA Field Hockey U-21 Junior National team, and has been a great asset to the Owls, Coach Ali Brant said.

“This is such a remarkable milestone for Sophia, our program and the School,” Brant said. “Soph has worked so hard and has come so far as a player and to mark her senior day with this kind of achievement boasts very well for all of us. When she scored the goal I was beaming — this kid earns everything she gets. The best part is that she’s not done yet.”

The Owls have two regular season games to complete before heading to the PAISAA Field Hockey Tournament. The No. 2 seed team will play their first tournament game on Nov. 11.

Before the tournament starts, however, the Owls go up against No. 1 seed Episcopal Academy during the school’s annual AIS/EA Day competition on Nov. 7. The rivalry, now in its 10th year, pits AIS’s soccer, field hockey, cross country and tennis teams against EA.

“We have no doubt that we will play together as a team to keep the banner at AIS,” Tornetta said.
