Stick Shift Thwarts Main Line Carjacker: Police

The suspect, who was armed with a handgun, apparently couldn't work a clutch and stick shift, according to police.

An attempted carjacking on the Main Line failed when the suspect couldn't drive the vehicle away because it was a manual transmission. The suspect, who was armed with a gun, was later arrested after ditching the stick-shift car.

Police in Lower Merion Township arrested a 23-year-old male believed to be from Philadelphia Tuesday, Aug. 15 after he was unable to drive away a 2001 Honda Civic he attempted to carjack.

Police said that at about 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, a man armed with a handgun attempted to carjack the Civic on the 100 block of Edgehill Road in Bala Cynwyd.

The suspect was unable to drive the car away from the scene because the transmission was manual, police said.

When he couldn't drive the car away, the suspect fled the area on foot, police said.

A short while later, officers apprehended the suspect in the area of Bala and Union avenues, according to police.

A police K9 unit located the firearm nearby, police said.

Police said the suspect, whose identity was not released, has yet to be charged as he is a suspect in a carjacking that occurred Aug. 7 on the 100 block of City Avenue and other theft cases.
