Villanova Appealing Ordinance In Ongoing Light Battle

The fight over alleged light pollution from Villanova's stadium continues as the university is appealing Radnor's rules on its lights.

RADNOR TOWNSHIP, PA – In the ongoing fight between Radnor Township and Villanova University over light pollution, the school is appealing the zoning rules used to govern lighting at Villanova's stadium.

The university will make its case in front of Radnor's Zoning Hearing Board on Jan. 17 rather than at the Dec. 20 meeting.

In the appeal, the university is looking to change an 1980 decision that allowed the installation of 100-foot-tall lights at the stadium and permitted them to be on from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. to fit with a 2006 decision that said after 9 p.m. the lights should be limited a 50-foot maximum height and subsequently turned off at midnight.

Recently, the university began turning lights off at 10:30 p.m.

Seventh Ward Commissioner Sean Farhy said that residents in the Old Oaks area have complained about both the noise from the stadium and the brightness of the lights.
