Villanova Dealing With Roach Infestation, School Paper Says

Paper reports cockroaches are in campus residence and dining halls.

Students at Villanova University are getting unwanted guests in their dorm rooms and at meals, according to the Villanovan.

The student paper says cockroaches have been found in residence and dining halls recently.

"A cockroach infestation has taken hold in several of the University’s residence and dining halls," the Villanovan report. "There have been sporadic reports of roaches in Sheehan, Corr, St. Mary’s and Dougherty Halls. The roaches have been a problem for several weeks and students have taken notice."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says cockroaches "prefer a moist, warm habitat" and are scavengers that seek foods such as cheese, bakery products, starchy materials, sweet substances, and meat products.

"Unless the problem worsens, all Villanova dining areas will remain open," the Villanovan reports. "The Department of Residence Life urges students to store their food properly through practices like keeping all food in sealed containers and well above the floor."

The student paper goes on to say by cleaning up spills and disposing of drink containers immediately after use students can reduce the risk of infestation. The publication also says the university "urges students to report leaky pipes, cracks in walls, and sightings of pests."

A university coffee shop has also been affected by mice recently, according to the paper.
