Villanova Woman Pledges 10 Months Of National Service

"I wanted to try something new, and something selfless."

A local woman is committing to months of national service through an AmeriCorps program. Kelsey Durr of Villanova will spend 10 months helping Americans, while bolstering her own leadership skills.

Durr will join more than 120 other men and women to perform 10 months of service as part of the Atlantic Region’s 23rd class of the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC).

Durr and her team will work on a variety of projects and service areas, focusing on infrastructure improvement, urban and rural development, energy conservation, disaster response and recovery efforts, and environmental work, a press release said.

“I wanted to try something new, and something selfless," Durr said of her choice to embark on the mission.

Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross, The National Park Service, and various state agencies and nonprofit organizations are among some of the organizations Durr may work with during her months-long service work.

Once the 10 months are up, Durr will graduate from NCCC in November with an award of $5,815 that can be used to continue education or pay back student loans.

AmeriCorps NCCC is a full-time, residential, national service program in which 2,200 young adults serve nationwide each year.

During their 10-month term, Corps Members work in teams of eight to 12 on projects that address critical needs related to natural and other disasters, infrastructure improvement, environmental stewardship and conservation, energy conservation, and urban and rural development.
