Roxborough Organization Aims To Feed 3,000 Families In Need

Many area families cannot afford a big Thanksgiving meal. One local organization is hoping to help them out.

A Roxborough organization is asking for the public’s help provide area families in need with a Thanksgiving dinner.

One hundred percent of the children, youth and families that Northern Children’s Services works with are low-income. Of that 100%, there are many families who simply cannot afford a family dinner, let alone a big Thanksgiving meal.

Last year, Northern Children’s Services provided 200 baskets to their most vulnerable families. This year, the need has shockingly grown to 300 families in need of assistance for Thanksgiving. Northern is reaching out to the surrounding community, organizations, companies, clubs and churches to contribute to their Thanksgiving Food Drive this year. With a combined effort and dedication to hitting this ambitious goal, Northern Children’s Services is confident that they will fulfill this great need for their families.

“In the coming months ahead, I am motivated, determined and excited to allow Northern Children’s Services to shine even brighter for our children, youth, families and staff as we take on the holiday season but we need your help to make this happen! Please help us spread the word and donate to our Thanksgiving Food Drive and Holiday Toy Drive. Every little bit goes a long way!” said President and CEO, Renata Cobbs-Fletcher.

When Whitney Mallory moved into the permanent apartments at Northern Children’s Services the day before Thanksgiving last year, she was grateful that she and her two children finally had a place of their own to celebrate the holidays.

“What I’m looking forward to most around the holidays is my children being able to have a roof over their head. Being able to spend time with my family without having to be in the shelter will be so special,” Whitney said in an interview last year.

Since then, Mallory has continued to tell her story of resiliency, strength and courage. Check out this NewsWorks story, which was published on September 9, 2015, and talks more about Whitney’s struggle in the child welfare system and how she finally found a home at Northern Children’s Services after three tries.

Like Whitney, Northern Children’s Services serves many vulnerable families who are in need of hope during this holiday season. A Thanksgiving basket gives them just that. Help Northern Children’s Services ensure every family has a little bit of hope this holiday season by donating a basket or coordinating a drive with your church, organization, club and/or company. Every little bit truly does go a long way!
