When you’re in the mood for a sweet treat, nothing beats the freshly baked flaky pastries and bread of , a neighborhood institution that has stood at the same busy corner of Salisbury Township's eastern end for more than 80 years.

Located at 1800 Broadway, at the busy crossroads of Broadway, Susquehanna Street and Seidersville Road, many customers stop in to buy bread and rolls as part of their weekly grocery trip,

Others make a pitstop for their daily doughnut or any number of decadent pastries such as sticky buns, apple fritters, cannolis, cakes and strudels. And once a year on Fat Tuesday, the lines form out the door for their fastnachts, traditional Pennsylvania Dutch doughnuts made with lard. Vallos makes plain, glazed and powdered fastnachts.

The sticky buns are big sellers. Topped with raisins, walnuts and pecans, these buns are easy to pull apart, and are soft, chewy, and surprisingly not too sweet. They cost between $5.25-$6.

The apple fritters are large enough to share with a friend. The perfect dessert for those who have a sweet tooth.

One of the tastiest treats at the bakery is the cherry strudel. With just a hint of sugar on the top, the flaky pastry is filled with a slightly tart cherry filling.

For the high quality of the baked good, the prices are reasonable: $6.50 for a dozen doughnuts, $4.10 for a half dozen and a single donut costs 75 cents. A dozen apple fritters costs $7.50, $4.60 for a half dozen and 95 cents for a single apple fritter.

One word of caution before you stop in, the bakery only accepts cash—no credit cards, debit cards or checks.
