Dent Presents Plan to Extend Unemployment Benefits

Congressmen Charlie Dent, R-15th, and Mark Meadows of North Carolina introduced legislation this week to to extend unemployment benefits for a year.

U.S. Rep.Β Charlie Dent, R-15th,Β has joined a fellow lawmaker inΒ introducing aΒ plan to extendΒ unemployment benefits for a year and create jobs, according to a prepared release.

The legislation, titled theΒ GROWTH (Generating Real Opportunities for Workers and Transitional Help) Act,Β also would limit how longΒ a person is eligible for benefits. Β 

Mark Meadows, R-North Carolina, joined Dent in introducing the legislation in the House.

According to the release, the legislationΒ also would:

β€”Approved construction of the Keystone Pipeline, which Dent said couldΒ create 42,000 jobs annually over two years;

β€”Repeal the Medical Device Tax,Β a provision in the Affordable Care Act.Β 

β€”Change an Obamacare provision that sets the work week at 30 hours, toΒ 40 hours. Dent said that wouldΒ protect workers from having their hours cut or jobs eliminated.Β 

According to Politico, the Dent-Meadows legislationΒ would pay for the extensions byΒ prohibiting people from collecting unemployment and disability payments at the same time andΒ changing the rules on the child tax credit byΒ requiring that children claimed for a credit have a Social Security number.

β€œThis is a common sense proposal that continues to provide assistance to those who have lost their jobs and are looking for work while at the same time addressing the underlying problem of unacceptably high unemployment and slow economic growth,β€œΒ Dent said in the release.
