Fatal Truck Crash and Fire Close Part of I-78

Two tractor trailers crashed and one caught fire causing the closure of I-78 east in Upper Macungie Township on Monday morning. One person died in the accident.

 

One person is dead and traffic delays are reported in the area of Interstate 78 and Route 100 in Upper Macungie as crews clean up a crash involving two tractor trailers.

One lane of 78 east was reopened around 7:15 a.m., according to a Morning Call report.

The first emergency call came in at 4:20 a.m. reporting a truck fire at the Home Depot warehouse on Nestle Way.

The problem is now being reported as the collision of two tractor trailers with one of them catching fire. One was hauling steel and the other contained general merchandise.

One person died in the accident but details are not yet available pending the investigation, according to the Lehigh County coroner's office. Scanner reports indicate a man was trapped in one of the trucks.

Interstate 78 east in Lehigh County was closed between the Route 100 and New Smithville exits.
