Man Pleads Guilty in Lobster Theft, Carjacking

Charles Shumanis is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 18 in Lehigh County Court.

 

Charles A. Shumanis pleaded guilty Friday to stealing lobster from a supermarket and carjacking a man outside a South Whitehall restaurant, according to online court documents.

Sentencing for Shumanis, 46, who had no known address, is set for Oct. 18 before Lehigh County Judge Douglas Reichley.

Shumanis was arrested March 1 after he tried to steal lobster from  in Allentown. Then, while being pursued, he ran across Cedar Crest Boulevard and  a 79-year-old man's white BMW outside the  in South Whitehall. 

In a negotiated plea, Shumanis pleaded guilty to robbery of a motor vehicle, retail theft (two counts) and escape, according to court records. Additional charges were withdrawn.

According to a report on lehighvalleylive.com, Shumanis told the judge he stole the lobster to support his drug and alcohol problem. A prosecutor said there is a market for lobster on the street.
