Being inducted into National Honors Society at Parkland is something I have always aspired to accomplish and I'm very proud to finally be a part of the community. National Honors Society's goals are, "To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools."
The requirements to just be invited to apply for NHS is a 3.5 GPA (A-average). Once invited, you can fill out an application. This application includes all clubs and activities you are a part of at school. Next, you must list all outside activities. In addition, you must state everything you've done concerning community service/charity work. Finally, you have to write an essay under 500 words discussing an experience in which you were a leader.
I wrote my essay on the time I was an assistant stage manager of "The Little Mermaid" at Civic Theater. I decided to chose this experience in particular because I wanted to include my love and passion for theater. This displays how I am able to turn my passions into educating children who share this passion.
In the essay, I described my organization habits while on the job, the patience I obtained while dealing with children, and the encouragement I possessed while being in charge of so many children.
When I attended the induction ceremony, Mrs. Will, the advisor, really emphasized our role as members of the society. She said that we are now major role models in the school and we must continue the pursuit for integrity and kindness. I believe that I featured these attributes in my essay for the application.
I was extremely excited to find out that I was accepted into NHS. Not only does this look AMAZING on college applications, but I've also heard stories about it being extremely rewarding. One of your responsibilities as a part of NHS is tutoring students in various subjects. I have heard from older kids that after they completed the tutoring and the students showed great progress, they felt extremely proud of the work and encouragement they acquired through the process.
All in all, I am very grateful and honored to be chosen out of so many applicants to be a part of such a wonderful organization! I am anxious to see what the future will bring while being a member of National Honors Society at Parkland High School!
