Parkland Homecoming: and the best float goes to...

     Parkland's homecoming game is a memorable event every year. All of the students get extremely pumped to be involved in such a thrilling football game. This year, we played Bethlehem Catholic High School. Luckily, we won the game  49-6.

     Although the football game is extremely gripping to watch, the highlight of the night is always the incredible floats that are built, representing the clubs offered at the high school. These clubs range from Spanish Club, student officers, Interact Club, to Performing Arts Club. Each club has the opportunity to build a huge float on a trailer that attaches to a truck. The supervisor of the club usually drives the float around in a circle for all participating spectators to admire. It is such an amazing sight to see so many intricately decorated floats driving in a circle, one more stunning than the next. The unique aspect of the floats is that it's a competition. This motivates all of the builders to really make it the best it can be. A collective group of teachers and administrators judge the floats in various categories, but the most desired is number one overall.

     This year, the winner for best float overall went to the Performing Arts Club. Their theme for the float was "High School Musical." As displayed in the picture, the float must encompass all aspects of the performing arts club including chorus, orchestra, band, and theater. The float featured posters that listed all of these activities. Clearly, the float was successful in embracing all parts of the club into one big float! It is important to note the amount of precision and detail the club used including actual lights in the letters P-A-C. This took a great amount of time and focus in order to create such an ornate final product. 

     The clubs were also required to create a skit to go along with the theme of their float. The Performing Arts Club created a skit that went along with the movie “High School Musical.” According to Treasurer, Victoria Bartkavage, "the club decided to compile a few songs from the movie." Their goal was to express the main theme of the movie which is being inclusive and working as a team. Victoria also explained that inclusion is the Performing Arts Club’s motto. They consider themselves extremely welcoming and encouraging to any new members. (I can attest to this!) 

     All in all, the annual Parkland homecoming football game is not one to miss. It presents all of the clubs offered at the high school and shows how creative they can be. It also displays just how many ways one can get involved at Parkland. Even though it is a school of 4,000 students, these activities and clubs really do make the school feel smaller. Hey, it’s all about finding your niche, right?
