2013 TONY-WINNING COMEDY BRINGS EXPLOSIVE LAUGHTER TO THE STAGE AT FOOTLIGHTERS THEATER IN BERWYN!

What Tony Award Winning Play can you see this month locally that includes Wawa, Weather Celebrity Carol Erickson and Bucks County??

Footlighters Theater opens its 2015-16 season with the zany Broadway comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, winner of the 2013 Tony Award® for Best Play. Written by Bucks County resident and comic genius Christopher Durang and directed by local thespian Travis Milman, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike opens in Berwyn on September 11th at the Main Line’s oldest community theater, running for three consecutive weekends.

Set in our own Bucks County (with plenty of local references for audiences to enjoy), Vanya and his sister Sonia tolerate the complete mediocrity of their middle-aged lives until their movie-star sister Masha returns. With her “boy-toy,” Spike, in tow, Masha kicks the angst into high gear, then incites a madcap family reunion complete with all the comic genius that only Christopher Durang can deliver. Themes of existential loss and longing banter with a crazy mix of tender and uproarious family interactions, leaving plenty of opportunity for the eccentric group to play off each other while they opine on their circumstances. With star-struck Nina and clothes-optional Spike flashing youthfulness at every turn, the elders react with everything from voodoo dolls to dwarf costumes, culminating in Vanya’s Act 2 outburst, ping- ponging between howls of anguish against the changing world while parodying such a monologue at the same time.

This brilliant, often absurd comedy, won every Best Play Award of the 2012-2013 season, from the Tony to the New York Critics. But the heartbreak is as memorable as the hilarity. In the end, both the characters and audience are reminded of the importance of family and share the recollection that, even for the heartsick, laughter is truly the best medicine.
