2015 American Red Cross of Chester County Heroes Breakfast

Wednesday, April 08, 2015 at The Desmond Hotel, 1 Liberty Blvd., Malvern, PA

The American Red Cross is proud to honor West Chester University (WCU) at the 2015 Chester County Heroes Breakfast.

When severe ice storms and widespread power outages struck Chester County in February of 2014, WCU provided shelter space for both people and animals that needed a warm place to stay and access to food, medical care and recovery support.

Together with the Department of Public Welfare (DPW), Chester County Emergency Management and other partners, the Red Cross operated a shelter at WCU for eight days, serving more than 200 people.

In addition to space, WCU provided facilities and security personnel to keep the shelter clean and safe, as well as invaluable student volunteers who helped set up, break down and staff the shelter along with Red Cross workers.

Chief Michael D. Bicking and John DiSpaldo of WCU’s Department of Public Safety were instrumental in making the shelter possible. They also attended after action meetings and are working with the Red Cross and Chester County Emergency Management in preparation for future emergencies.
