EASTTOWN, PA — Easttown Police are warning the public after a resident lost thousands to a phone scammer.
On Wednesday, an Easttown resident got a call from a man claiming to be "Sgt. Allen" from the Chester County Sheriff's Department, police said.
The caller falsely claimed that the victim had a warrant out for her arrest because she failed to appear for jury duty.
"The suspect convinced the resident to deposit 5,000 into a Bitcoin machine/account," Easttown Police said. "Residents are reminded to be cautious of this type of scam. No government agency, public utility, or legitimate business will request payment through Bitcoin kiosks or gift cards."
If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and notify Easttown Police at 610-647-1440. Do not withdraw money or provide bank account information.
