Main Line EMT Dies In Scooter Crash While Attending College

TREDYFFRIN, PA — A Conestoga High School alumnus who served as a local EMT died Tuesday after a scooter crash in Pittsburgh, where loved ones say he was preparing for his senior year of college.

Graduating from high school in 2023, Taha Chomelawala was a rising senior at the University of Pittsburgh's Frederick Honors College. With dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon, Chomelawala was entering his senior year at the University of Pittsburgh's Frederick Honors College.

On Aug. 23, Chomelawala was involved in a scooter accident in Pittsburgh. He succumbed to his injuries two days later, surrounded by his loved ones, according to a GoFundMe supporting Chomelawala's family.

"Those who knew Taha knew him as a bubbly, compassionate, and boundlessly energetic person who poured that energy into his dream of becoming a neurosurgeon and caring for his community," the GoFundMe page says.

Chomelawala served as a volunteer EMT for the Berwyn Fire Company, which he joined while in high school in 2022. In college, he was a medical researcher and teaching assistant.

"Taha was a registered EMT with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, along with holding other training certificates," the fire company said. "Taha took great pride in volunteering and was an active participant during the move into the new Bridge Avenue fire station in 2025."

Chomelawala had lived in Tredyffrin with his family. He held deep love for his family, friends and his twin brother, the GoFundMe says.

"In the days since the accident, Taha's family has faced not only an unbearable grief but the significant weight of medical costs from his time in critical care and the expenses of laying him to rest," the fundraising page says. "This fund exists so that they can grieve their son and brother without carrying that burden alone."

A public memorial service is set for 3 p.m. Sept. 6 at Conestoga High School (200 Irish Road, Berwyn).
