Chief of Chester County Detectives Honored By Lawmakers

WEST CHESTER (February 18) – State Senator Andy Dinniman recently recognized James Vito, Chief of the Chester County Detectives on his retirement, the senator announced in a news release.

Having been hired in 1979, Vito was the longest serving member of the District Attorney’s Office, according to Dinniman’s office.

During his tenure, he served under six Chester County District Attorneys: William Lamb, James Freeman, James MacElree, Anthony Sarcione, Joseph Carroll and Tom Hogan.

In recognition of his service, Dinniman presented Vito with a special citation from the Pennsylvania Senate acknowledging his “exemplary knowledge, ability and integrity in carrying out his many responsibilities,” the news release states.

“Chief Vito has seen many changes in hester County during his more than three decades in law enforcement,” Dinniman said in a statement. “But what has not changed is the commitment, courage and sacrifice of the all those who serve to keep our communities safe. Chief Vito is a shining example of those values and I want to offer my deepest appreciation for his work and best wishes for a well-deserved retirement.”

During his time with the county detectives, Vito oversaw numerous high-profile cases. He also led the launch of several important initiatives including the Computer Forensics Unit, the Crime Scene Forensics Unit, and the Child Abuse Unit.

Prior to joining the county detectives, Vito began his career in law enforcement with the West Goshen Township Police in 1976. In addition, Vito served in the United States Coast Guard and recently retired from the Coast Guard Reserve.

Vito is the husband of Marian Thayer Vito, who was recently elected to the position of Magisterial District Judge in West Chester.

As Chief of the Chester County Detectives, he is succeeded by Kevin Dykes, who formerly served as lieutenant.
