Conestoga Shuts Out Penncrest

The Pioneers put the Lions to rest in a downpour.

The handily defeated Penncrest High School on Friday night. The game, played in a downpour for three of its four quarters, ended in a score of 23-0. Conestoga commanded the game from the opening kick-off, scoring its first points less than five minutes into the game.

The game's first quarter saw Consetoga rack up a touchdown with a good blend of passing and running. The heavy rain would normally preclude a passing game but the Pioneers seemed uninterested in conventional football wisdom. That touchdown was capped off with a two-point conversion ending the quarter with a score of 8-0. In the second quarter deep in their own territory, the Lions, finding themselves at fourth down with eight yards to go, set up to punt only to have Conestoga it and recover the ball in the Lion's end zone. That safety brought the score to 10-0, a score that would hold through the second quarter.

In the second half, the rain tapered off, at least for a while. But that brief dry spell was not an advantage for Penncrest. The Pioneers continued with a combined running and passing game coupled with a very aggressive defense. Another touchdown and extra point brought the score to 17-0 at the end of the third quarter.

When the fourth quarter began it was as if it were a signal for more rain. This time the rain was worse than before. It poured, turning the filed into a slippery wet skill taxing turf. That did not stop Conestoga from scoring another seven points about four minutes into the quarter. That would be the final score of the night with the game ending at 23-0.

Conestoga visits Springfield Sept. 30.
