Tredyffrin Public Library will host four very different and equally interesting local authors during Conversations: The Fourth Annual Fall Author Series. The series begins with Pulitzer Prize finalist, book critic, and philosophy professor Carlin Romano, author of America the Philosophical.
Romano challenges the often-held stereotype of the U.S. as an anti-intellectual society. Romano will make a convincing case that America is a place of lively intellectual life and healthy public debate. He’ll present thinkers and cultural critics whose ideas have broadened the boundaries of philosophy.
"America’s philosophy is a pragmatic one, Romano argues, aimed not at locating absolute truth in the ether, but instead confronting real world problems and finding real world solutions. Romano highlights the oft-overlooked contributions of African-Americans, women, and gays before tackling contemporary realms of cyber technology and popular culture. At its core, the work seeks to shift our definition of philosophy from an emphasis on reason and truth-finding to philosophy as a form of persuasion that aims to find better solutions to problems." --Publishers Weekly
