FREE May 25 High-Tech Vision Screenings for Kids Ages 3 to 6 at Royer-Greaves School in Paoli

Royer-Greaves School for Blind Partners with VisionCorps to Protect Sight With Early Vision Screening

Paoli, PA…Royer-Greaves School for Blind will host a free VisionCorps KidSight Vision Screening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 25 for children ages 3 to 6. The screenings will take place at the Manor House on Royer-Greaves’ campus, 118 South Valley Road, Paoli, PA, 19301.

No appointment is necessary, but those with questions may call 610-644-1810 and ask for Vicky.

Early vision screening is a vital tool in vision protection. The earlier in a child’s life a vision problem is detected, the sooner it can be corrected or treated. Yet young children who have an undiagnosed vision problem may not realize anything is wrong with their sight, or may have trouble expressing what they experience.

This is why VisionCorps developed its high-tech KidSight Screening program, and why Royer-Greaves School for Blind was eager to partner with VisionCorps as a host site for these free screenings.

“Some issues become progressively worse when left untreated. Most can hamper a child’s ability to learn in a typical school setting,” said Royer-Greaves School for Blind Executive Director Vicky Mayer. “Opening our school to VisionCorps and their wonderful free screening program, we can really make a difference for children and families.”

Using a hand-held device that is similar to a camera from a few feet away, a VisionCorps’ KidSight Screening bounces light off the back of the eye to detect refraction problems, explained VisionCorps’ Community Outreach and Service Liaison Mary Sue Boyle. The results may point to problems such as near- or far-sightedness, astigmatism, or lazy eye.

The exams themselves are ideal for 3- to 6-year-olds. They take less than 10 seconds! “Quickness is key when we’re dealing with such young children,” Boyle said. And parents whose children are non-verbal or shy needn’t worry -- this isn’t like the reading eye tests at the doctor’s office. “The screening process does not require any feedback from the child at all,” Boyle said.
