Dr. Friedman has been repeatedly recognized as one of the best doctors in America. Harvey received his medical degree from McGill University and did his training in Montreal. He was a fellow in Neurovirology at the Wistar Institute and then in Infectious Diseases at the University of Pennsylvania. He then served as Penn’s Chief of Infectious Diseases from 1990-2013. Dr. Friedman’s research involves the development of a herpes vaccine.
Dr. Friedman will discuss with the HomeGrown audience his role as director of the Botswana-UPenn Partnership that began in 2001 at the invitation of Merck Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Government of Botswana. The BUP’s initial objective was to help train local health care providers in HIV care, and now includes research and medical education. HIV, the cause of AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), is the world’s leading infectious killer. In addition, the Partnership is dedicated to the treatment of Tuberculosis and the complications of TB.

Dr. Friedman will talk about the threat of global disease as one of the consequences of living in our increasingly well-traveled world. He will explain how the resources of a unique partnership are transforming medicine in Africa and impacting the lives of millions globally.
