Man Traveled From States Away To Sexually Assault Child At Hotel On The Main Line: Police

TREDYFFRIN, PA — A man traveled from South Carolina to sexually assault an underage girl in a Berwyn hotel, police said.

Edgar Amilcar Maquinpop, 21, met the 14-year-old victim on Instagram and communicated with her for about a year, according to an affidavit from Tredyffrin Police.

Maquinpop gave her a fake name, claimed he was 18 and led the victim to believe they were boyfriend and girlfriend, police said.

The victim told police she had multiple sexual encounters with Maquinpop, who she knew as "Kevin Gutierrez." Before his arrest on Aug. 2, Maquinpop sexually assaulted her at the Fairfield Inn in Berwyn, police said.

Tredyffrin Police first encountered Maquinpop early that morning after pulling him over for speeding and running a stop sign. The victim was in the passenger seat, police said.

During the stop, Maquinpop told police his name is Kevin and provided a South Carolina driver's license. Police discovered the license was fake and detained him for providing false identification.

Maquinpop provided his real name and date of birth at the police station. A Guatemalan passport was seized from his car, but the affidavit contains no further details about the passport or Maquinpop's residency.

He lives in Ehrhardt, South Carolina, according to court documents.

Maquinpop was arrested Aug. 2 and charged with unlawful contact with a minor, statutory sexual assault and other felony sex offenses. He was also charged with misdemeanor counts related to identity theft and false identity.

He remains jailed in Chester County after failing to post $250,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 20.

Online court records do not list a defense attorney who could comment on Maquinpop's behalf.
