Need a Break from Caregiving?
Surrey offers family caregivers a weekend program for older adults that provides activities, programs, gentle exercise and snacks and meals

When Mary’s mother passed away she moved her father, Jim, from New York state where he had lived his whole life into her home. Mary cared for her father, took him on outings, prepared meals he liked and ensured he was engaged and safe.
However, Mary needed some time for her own appointments and errands. Jim didn’t want to accompany Mary, but when she left him at home for an extended amount of time, he was lonely and forgot to eat. He became withdrawn and sad.
Fortunately, Mary heard about a new program that Surrey was offering, Weekend Respite Care. During this program, offered two weekends per month, Jim would have a choice of activities to participate in each day. Snacks and meals are included. Moreover, Jim’s preferences and needs would be incorporated in a personalized care plan to ensure he was engaged and comfortable.

How the Program Works
Mary’s first step to enroll Jim was contacting Surrey at 610-647-9840 and scheduling an in-home assessment. Marie, a member of Surrey’s Home Care Staff, visited Mary and Jim to learn more about Jim’s interests, hobbies, food preferences etc. Marie also collected all Jim’s medical and contact information.

During the assessment, Mary was able to schedule the days that Jim was going to participate. The Weekend Respite Care program is offered two weekends per month, from 10 am to 3 pm. Transportation may be available for an additional cost. The 5 hour program costs $85 per day.
Jim’s Experience
After taking Jim to Surrey at 10, Mary was nervous about how he would like it. When she returned at 3, Jim was calm and engaged, intently working a puzzle. He was sitting with two other men and periodically would pat a service dog that a volunteer brought by for a visit. Surrey staff shared Jim’s day with Mary. He participated in chair yoga, took part in a sing along with live piano music, enjoyed a delicious lunch and watched part of a football game.
Mary was relieved. She now had help that she could trust and rely on. Best of all, her father enjoyed his day and was happy to participate on future weekends.
