Pa. First-Grader Faces Expulsion Over Toy Gun
The boy brought the toy to school by mistake, and turned it over to his teacher. He got suspended.
A Pennsylvania first-grader, who accidentally brought a toy gun to school and turned it in to his teacher when he realized the mistake, is facing expulsion.
Darin Simak, 7, is a first-grader at Martin School in New Kensington, WTAE said. He left his book bag at a friend's house, so his mother packed his school things in a different bag, not realizing he had toys in there, Darin's parents told WTAE.
Darin turned the gun in to his teacher because he knew it was against the rules. But the district suspended him anyway. And now he could be expelled.
An expulsion hearing is scheduled for Friday afternoon. The district's policy is a one-year suspension for "replica" weapons, WTAE says.
Do suspension and expulsion make sense in this case? Should there be blanket rules, or should things be handled on a case-by-case basis?
