Mt. Zion AME Church 380 N. Fairfield Road Devon, Pa 19333 Contact: Bertha Jackmon, Church Historian
On Saturday, October 4, 2014, 2:00 PM, a very long overdue event will take place at Mt. Zion AME Church, 380 N. Fairfield Road, Devon, Pa 19333. The program will be, “A Slave to A Soldier to A Free Man: Commemoration of the Life of Sgt. Isaac Hall, Civil War Veteran,” Regiment 32, Company K.
In May 2013, Sgt. Hall’s great-great-granddaughter, Mrs. Dianne Cross, contacted Mt. Zion AME Church saying she just located his burial site: the church cemetery. She explained that she had been giving presentations on how he became a soldier for four years, but never knew his resting place.
The church has record of Sgt. Hall’s membership and death, July 12, 1902, but no available documentation of his serving in the Civil War.

Mrs. Cross and the Church Historian, Ms. Bertha Jackmon, have since placed a claim for his headstone with the Department of Veterans Administration. With the help and skills of
Mr. Eugene Hough, a cemetery preservationist and spearhead of the Saving Hallowed Ground Program, based in Wayne Pa, a location for the headstone was determined. It was installed in Mt. Zion’s cemetery several weeks ago, and it is believed to be the first headstone placed there in almost 60 years. (Mr. Hough is working with Mt. Zion on their cemetery investigation, preservation and documentation project.)
Sgt. Hall is now on the list of at least eighteen other named U.S. Colored Troops in Mt. Zion’s cemetery.

The program will feature a presentation on Sgt Hall’s life, music, song, poetry, words and Graveside Salute by the 3rd Regiment Infantry Re-enactors from Philadelphia, and dinner.
A flyer is attached for your convenience.
The church is handicapped accessible.
