The British Are Coming: 2-Day Revolutionary War Re-Enactment Coming To Tredyffrin

TREDYFFRIN, PA — Redcoats will descend on Tredyffrin Township this month as a Revolutionary War encampment and re-enactment brings the area's colonial history to life.

His Majesty’s 40th Regiment, 2nd Battalion Light Infantry — known as the “Bloodhounds” — will set up an 18th-century British military camp at Teegarden Park on the weekend of Sept. 19. The free event is part of Chester County’s 250th anniversary celebration.

Visitors will see period uniforms and equipment, weapons demonstrations, military drills and examples of camp life while interacting with re-enactors. The event will also explore how British troops adapted their tactics to the wooded and uneven terrain of North America.

The event has a particular connection to Tredyffrin. After the Battle of Brandywine in September 1777, British Commander-in-Chief Sir William Howe's army spent three days in the township recovering, resupplying and re-arming. The British camp stretched across about two miles of the Great Valley.

Members of the Tredyffrin Township Historical Commission will also present new research into the British Army's impact on local residents, including plundering that affected more than half of the township's farms.

The encampment runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 19 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 20 at Teegarden Park (440 Old State Road, Berwyn). Click here for more info.
