Traditional Botswana dancers return to the Wayne Art Center as part of the closing celebration for The National Art of Botswana exhibition.

The Wayne Art Center has been pleased to host The National Art of Botswana: Contemporary Art & Craft which opened on February 16th. This exhibition, a partnership between Wayne Art Center and the Republic of Botswana and the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture, is an exciting and important cultural exchange for our community, as well as an important avenue of education about Botswana culture through examples of traditional arts. The exhibition features basketry, paintings, prints, jewelry & photographs.

On Saturday, March 14th Join the Wayne Art Center in celebrating the closing of this important exhibition. From 11:30AM – 1:00PM we are pleased to welcome back Rhythms of the Kalahari, an energetic Tswana dance team featuring Mumcy Mpelege, educator, singer and dancer based in Brooklyn, NY, and Mpho Setshwane, singer, dancer and educator from Washington, DC. Ms. Mpelege and Ms. Setshwane will perform a number of traditional dances, and give an educational talk about the importance of dance in Botswanan culture. They will also be available directly after the program to answer any questions the audience may have. They have stated that

“The goal of their performance is to share our culture, heritage and pride to tell the story of our people, to encourage talent and freedom of expression and to close gaps between nations because when we understand one another we deal with each other better. Our dance denotes the beauty of life and of being different, it epitomizes hope since it was used even it times when the society felt inadequate, so it lifted people up.”
