TE’s Favorite Movies of 2011

Here are some of the most popular movies of 2011. Catch one of the latest releases during winter break.

Though the Associated Press is reporting that movie attendance is down to a 16-year low, drawing the smallest audiences since 1995, there are still a few days left to bump 2011’s numbers over the mark.

Management at Wayne’s Anthony Wayne Theatre told Patch that the biggest hits of the year were The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 1 and Cars 2. The Chipmunks new release did pretty well, and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is this holiday’s big hit.

Year to date top grossing numbers are in and according to BoxOfficeMojo.com Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 took the top spot grossing over $381 million.

The top pirated movies of the year as reported by the Washington Post include:

Fast Five, Hangover Part II, Thor, Source Code, I AM Number Four, Sucker Punch, 127 Hours, Rango, The King’s Speech, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. 

Looking Ahead

While the AP reports 2011 movie sales are down by 3.5 percent, industry executives are convinced that next year will be a better year.

Here are the big hits that the AP is reporting for 2012:

“Among the highlights: the superhero tales "The Dark Knight Rises," "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "The Avengers"; the latest in the animated franchises "Ice Age" and "Madagascar," along with "Brave," the new adventure from animation master Pixar; Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones' "Men in Black 3"; Daniel Craig's new James Bond thriller "Skyfall"; Johnny Depp's vampire story "Dark Shadows"; Ridley Scott's "Prometheus," a cousin to his sci-fi classic "Alien"; and Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," the first in a two-part prequel to his "Lord of the Rings" films.

"That's just a small sampling of 2012's big-screen titles, which also include 3-D reissues of "Titanic," "Finding Nemo," "Beauty and the Beast" and "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace."
