TESD Elementary Schools Could Be Redistricted

The board will hear redistricting recommendations at its upcoming May 22 meeting.

WAYNE, PA – Elementary students in the Tredyffrin/Easttown School District could be shuffling around. The district's board of eudcation will hear recommendations on redistricting for the district's elementary schools in hopes of addressing enrollment issues at the schools.

According to the district, a committee has developed recommendations related to redistricting of Devon, Beaumont, and Hillside elementary schools and will present those findings to the board on May 22 at the regular board meeting.

The action comes as the district looks to even out enrollment disparities across the elementary schools.

Ideally, the redistricting will put each school's enrollment at 450 to 500 students.

According to the district, Beaumont has 385 students, Devon 600, and Hillside 415.

The committee looked at the following criteria for addressing the issue, according to the district:

  • numbers of students in each school;
  • transportation routes;
  • contiguous neighborhoods;
  • proximity to attending schools;
  • and reasonably shaped districts.

Should the board approve the recommendation, an Elementary Redistricting Committee will be formed in June 2017.

The Elementary Redistricting Committee will include administrative staff, an external facilitator, consultants as needed, and parent volunteers from Devon Elementary School (two parents), Beaumont Elementary School (one volunteer) and Hillside Elementary School (one volunteer) to serve on the committee.

Parent volunteers must have children who will be rising kindergartners through second graders during the 2017-2018 school year.

The parent volunteer application will be open on the district website from Tuesday, May 23 at 9 a.m. through Friday, June 2 at 5 p.m.
