Woodlynde School MLK Mural Project Participants Meet Mayor Nutter

At a recent press conference for the 19th Annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service, 11 Woodlynde Upper School students who worked to create their school's panel for the MLK Mural Project met Philadelphia's Mayor Nutter. Honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King, Woodlynde's panel will be on display at Girard College on the Martin Luther King Day of Service on January 21.

For at least ten years, participation in the MLK Mural Project has been a tradition for interested Woodlynde Upper School students each winter. This year, students teamed up with artist James Burns of Philadelphia's Mural Arts Program to create a mural depicting the Day of Service's theme of the 60th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. Students meet after school to create a concept and to paint the mural.

"I think participation in the mural project is a great way for our students to learn more about the legacy of Martin Luther King and at the same time deepen their interests in painting," says upper school art teacher Anne Russell, who oversees the project at Woodlynde.

Woodlynde's mural panel was combined with panels from six other schools in Philadelphia area to create a 36-by-5-foot mural.
