Woodlynde School Participates in MLK Mural Project

For the 20th year, Woodlynde School students have created a mural that will be on display at the Greater Philadelphia King Day of Service.

Woodlynde School, a K-12 college-prep school for students with learning differences, was among five area schools to create a mural that will inspire and educate volunteers during the Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service at Girard College on January 16.

This year, the King Day of Service focuses on Dr. King’s work for justice in education. Inspired by Dr. King’s article “The Purpose of Education,” Woodlynde School students created a mural that symbolizes humans as a machine that can process and distribute knowledge in a positive way when paired with good character.

Participation in the MLK Mural Project has become a 20-year tradition for interested Woodlynde Middle and Upper School students each year. Starting in November, 11 students met after school to create a concept and paint the mural itself.

“We read and discussed Dr. King’s article as a group, and students shared their thoughts and personal experiences that related to the article,” says Kat Lee, art teacher and advisor of the MLK Mural Project at Woodlynde. “In a way, I think the project is very therapeutic to the students. It bonds them together as they hope for positive changes in our world.”

The mural will be on display at Girard College during the Day of Service as a visual reminder and inspiration for what the day is about to those participating in the day. The Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is the largest King Day of Service in the nation, with over 145,000 volunteers.
