EASTERN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — The sign was posted for some time, offering a shortcut into a key eastern Montgomery County community.

The Fort Washington Zip Ramp opened for the first time to commuters coming off the Pennsylvania Turnpike exit for Ambler.

The new ramp provides drivers with a direct route from the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Commerce Drive and also to Virginia Drive.

Normally, those heading off the exit would have to go straight into the Oreland area to access Fort Washington or head on Route 309 toward Montgomeryville to get to other parts of Upper Dublin Township.

The ramp is expected to improve connectivity, reduce congestion, and support continued growth in the Fort Washington area, which has seen a rise in luxury apartment complexes along the PA Turnpike.

The section of Upper Dublin Township has undergone a transformation over the past few years.

The redevelopment of a 536-acre office park includes a Lifetime Fitness complex, new retail outlets, and TruMark Credit Union’s headquarters.

Three former office properties were converted to apartment buildings, with a fourth turned into a storage facility.
