Boys Tennis: Cardinals Sweep Upper Moreland at Home

The Cardinals continue a strong season with another decisive victory.

The Upper Dublin boys tennis team turned in another dominant performance at home on Monday, sweeping Upper Moreland to improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the Suburban One American League.

The Cardinals’ three representatives in single all easily dispatched their opponents. Hari Murali led the way in first singles, defeating Kyle Platt 6-1, 6-2. Mike Melchiorre followed with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Jon Baez, and Upper Dublin’s Jason Chaverson picked up a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Vai Ranganathan in third singles.

The Cardinal and Gray had a slightly tougher test in first and second doubles. Joe Bruch and Tony Vernacchio battled through three close sets with Upper Moreland’s Matt Dummeldirge and Kyle Gallagher, posting a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 victory.

Jason Britchkow and Kevin Hollingsworth followed with a close victory of their own, defeating Conrad Mason and Pat Staiber in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Upper Dublin rounded out the sweep when the third doubles team of Matt Swiren and Ben Kramer picked up a win over Tim DeCarolis and Tim Uvegas, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6, and the fourth doubles pairing of Alex Fleischer and Dak Kofsky dispatched Andre Cox and Brian Baist, 6-0, 6-3.

The Cardinals now stand with a nearly unblemished record, although four of their matches have been postponed due to weather.

They next take to the courts April 25, when Upper Merion pays a visit at 3:30 pm.
